Not a textbook — a five-day trainee story

Every RPIT trainee works through this exact course before their first client visit. The questions follow Aditi, a new hire, from her first Monday morning to a Friday-evening certification — the same forty questions, in the same order, that turn "I know some Excel" into "clients trust me with their spreadsheets."

““This isn't a textbook,” her trainer tells her, sliding the workbook across the desk. “Every one of these forty is something a real client has actually asked us for — sorted, phrased so you can't just wing it, and checkable, so you'll know the moment you get one wrong instead of finding out three weeks later at a client's office.””

What the five chapters cover

Learning to see the data

Chapter 1 · Day 1, morning · Level 1 — Basic

Making the sheet answer back

Chapter 2 · Day 2 · Level 2 — Intermediate

Judgment calls

Chapter 3 · Day 3 · Level 3 — Advanced

“Two formulas can both return the right answer today and only one of them is still right in six months,” her trainer warns before Chapter 3. This is w…

The client walk-through

Chapter 4 · Day 4 · Level 4 — Expert

Thursday is presentation day. RPIT's clients — school administrators, coaching-class owners, shop managers — don't want to see 1,000 rows. They want o…

The certification challenge

Chapter 5 · Day 5 · Bonus — Cross-Sheet Challenge

Frequently asked questions

Is this actually free?

Yes. The workbook, the PDF and the web version are all free for personal learning, study and classroom use. Commercial use (resale, paid courses, redistribution on a paid platform) needs written permission — write to [email protected].

Do I need Microsoft Excel, or does Google Sheets work?

The workbook is built and verified in Excel (2007-era formulas throughout, so it works on old and new versions alike). Most questions work fine in Google Sheets too, except the Excel-only features called out explicitly — Power Query, macros, and true PivotTable Slicers.

I don't have Microsoft 365 — can I still do Question 37 (XLOOKUP)?

Yes. XLOOKUP needs Microsoft 365 or Excel 2021+, so that one question is marked optional — the INDEX/MATCH version from Question 21 already solves the same problem and works on every version.

Is there really an answer key?

Yes — all 40 questions, with the expected numeric result, the exact formula, and (for the PivotTable/macro/Power Query questions) a step-by-step correctness check. Every number was recalculated against the real 1,000-row workbook, not estimated.

Who is this course for?

Anyone going from zero or basic Excel to job-ready — it's the same 40 questions RPIT Computers hands every new trainee in Mumbai before their first client visit.
